The Thanksgiving Day holiday is upon us, and the White House turkey has pardoned George Bush (errr, maybe I’ve got that backwards, but I suppose that professional courtesy could go either way in instances of executive Thanksgiving pardons). From the Memphis Flyer:

It happened today at that corny annual Thanksgiving ritual in which the president of the United States takes a break from screwing up the world for a few minutes to officially “pardon” a turkey.

Don’t ask us why. We have no clue. All we know is that there was an online vote (Somehow we missed that. Was Diebold involved?) and America chose to name its mock-sacrificial turkey “Flyer.”

In an ironic twist, we here at the Flyer also pardoned a turkey today. We haven’t decided what to call him yet. We’re torn between “Decider” and “F**king Idiot.”

We can all be thankful that the American people finally woke up and chose a different direction for the country on November 7th, and we can only hope that in the coming months, the electoral mandate for renewal of our country will be rewarded.

If you are a person of faith, please pray that our sons and daughters and brothers and sisters and mothers and fathers in the armed forces are brought home soon from Iraq. And it’s also important to remember that, on this day when it was reported that nearly 4000 Iraqis were killed last month in the mayhem that engulfs their nation, every one of those faceless statistics were people. Every single one of them was once a fetus. So, pray for them as well, because they don’t have a whole lot to be thankful for at this particular moment in history.

And if you worship no particular deity, it simply can’t hurt to take a quiet moment and reflect on the senseless and illegal war that put both our troops and Iraqis in harms way.

In any case, expect that ASZ blog postings will be light over the next few days. Enjoy your holiday!
