The fallout from AttorneyGate continues. As SpinDentist noted below, apparently the White House is involved up to its proverbial hips in the scandal. This morning, it was announced that AG Alberto Gonzales’ chief of staff, Kyle Sampson, is resigning effective immediately.
The Washington Post said Sampson resigned after acknowledging he did not tell other Justice Department officials about the extent of his communications with the White House. His omission led Justice officials to provide incomplete information to Congress, it said.
I smell something really, really stinky here.
And, the faux outrage continues:
“I am outraged that the attorney general was less than forthcoming with the Senate while under oath,” Sen. Patrick Leahy said.
I’m expecting Capt. Louis Renault of the Casablanca Prefect’s Office to provide commentary later today. Until then, Josh Marshall continues to lead the pack on this still-developing scandal. According to TPM, Gonzales is scheduled to speak at 2PM. Resignation speculation? It would be irresponsible not to speculate at this point…
Update: This is going to get really, really interesting really, really fast. Check out this email from Sampson. As Paul Kiel notes, what about the “follow up item” that was too hot to discuss in an email with Harriet Meirs, and needed to be dealt with on the phone? My guess is that we’re not talking about a Chinese takeout order…
