Mitt Romney: Five Sons, No Soldiers and a Winnebago
Operation Yellow Elephant should turn its eyes to Mitt Romney and his sons, all of whom support their Dad’s standing behind Bush’s failed policies in Iraq, but none of whom are willing to serve.
Mitt Romney has five boys. He supports Bush’s actions in Iraq. But not one of those sons of his has volunteered for service in that war. They’re busy riding in a Winnebago. Mitt is definitely supportive of Bush polices. It says so here on his web site, and he’s said so many times in debates. But when asked what his son’s commitments are towards fighting terrorism, he’s happy they are working to get him elected. From the Associated Press:
“The good news is that we have a volunteer Army and that’s the way we’re going to keep it,” Romney told some 200 people gathered in an abbey near the Mississippi River that had been converted into a hotel. “My sons are all adults and they’ve made decisions about their careers and they’ve chosen not to serve in the military and active duty and I respect their decision in that regard.”
He added: “One of the ways my sons are showing support for our nation is helping me get elected because they think I’d be a great president.”
Romney’s five sons range in age from 37 to 26 and have worked as real estate developers, sports marketers and advertising executives. They are now actively campaigning for their father and have a “Five Brothers” blog on Romney’s campaign Web site.
Hmm. And they impugn all us liberal bloggers. I don’t support the Bush invasion of Iraq, as Romney does, and I therefore do not encourage my nephews to go and fight. I’m honest in that. Mitt Romney does support Bush’s failed policies in Iraq. And he’s bold enough to state that his sons are serving by working to get himself elected.
What a putz!
Update: Mittster’s campaign has released a video on YouTube, and is claiming that his quotes were taken out of context. TPM Election Central has the video, plus some great comments. Take a look, and you decide.

You beat me to the punch.
I was going to write something up on this when I had a moment.
I think this one single issue is going to lose Romney a lot of support. I’m surprised that it took so long for someone to ask the question.
Bottom line: as long as it’s some poor kid from Quincy who has no other options putting his / her ass on the line for the GOP’s glorious little war, that’s quite OK for Mitt “Double Guantanamo” Romney.
I think Tagg would look just fine in desert cammo.
putz? is that the ultimate insult - to use a yiddish word to denigrate a mormon?
before he was saying that he considered his sons’ mormon-mandatory missionary service to be a fully acceptable substitute for military service, as in that’s how they served their country.
sigh…
will someone please do a piece on the christian embassy story? i know richard will say i should go right ahead, but really, i just can’t find the words these days.
Go for it, somegirl. We need to see you writing here.
