Bush to Commute 5,700 Sentences

Mr. Bush is going to propose commuting the sentences of 5,700 soldiers currently serving in Iraq. He will say tonight he’s bringing them home this year, a full 3.39% of our force there. Please keep the cheering down for a moment, will you?

Commentary By: Steven Reynolds

Mr. Bush is expected to announce tonight that he is in favor of bringing home 5,700 troops from Iraq before the end of the year. I’d call that 5,700 commuted sentences. As far as I can tell, not one of these soldiers, a whole 3.39% of the number of soldiers in harms way in that war to get Saddam’s WMD, are named “Scooter” or “Libby.”

From the NY Times:

President Bush will tell the nation tonight that 5,700 combat troops can be pulled out of Iraq by Christmas because of progress in the war, the White House said this afternoon.

Mr. Bush, as had been widely expected, is accepting the recommendations of Gen. David H. Petraeus, the top commander in Iraq, and Ambassador Ryan C. Crocker. A key part of their recommendations is bringing the 5,700 marines and soldiers home and not replacing them.

Meanwhile, Rahm Emanuel has it right about tonight’s speech. We’re going to hear slogans, and about a 3.39% troop reduction in Iraq.

3.39%. What are the other 96.1% of military families with soldiers serving in Bush’s Folly supposed to think?
