VOTE EARTH

Rush to Action

You can take action in the Rush Limbaugh “phony soldier” controversy. Go ahead and write congress. Meantime, he’s calling them suicide bombers now.

Commentary By: Steven Reynolds

As Xsociate notes, Votevets.org are taking action against Rush Limbaugh with an ad featuring Brian McGough, a soldier who suffered Traumatic Brain Injury while in Iraq. I am moved by the text of the ad. From the Baltimore Sun:

The ad features Brian McGough of Washington, who was wounded by shrapnel in an enemy’s explosion. McGough received the Purple Heart for his traumatic brain injury.

“More and more troops and veterans of Iraq believe George Bush’s military policy has been a disaster…I am one of them,” McGough says in the ad, facing the camera with stern words for the radio commentator. “Rush Limbaugh called vets like me “phony soldiers” for telling the truth about Iraq.

“Rush, the shrapnel I took to my head was real,” he continues. “My traumatic brain injury was real. And, my belief that we are on the wrong course in Iraq is real. Until you have the guts to call me a “phony solider” to my face, stop telling lies about my service.”

The ad closes with the comment: “Tell Rush Limbaugh to stop insulting our troops and veterans.”

Rush Limbaugh’s response? Though he hasn’t seen the ad, or says he hasn’t, Mr. Limbaugh responded by comparing Brian McGough to a suicide bomber. Perhaps Rush thinks this is some kind of dare to him to try to reach the limit of our disgust? Doesn’t the fat pig know we don’t even waste time with disgust when we think of him?

The words move me. I suppose only pills move Rush. Brian McGough’s words should move all of us to action. Rush Limbaugh, the drug addict who has been most responsible for coarsening our political discourse with his divisive tripe over the last twenty years or so, needs a strong response from all of us. If you can just sign an internet petition, do so here by sending your email to Congress to support getting Rush off of Armed Forces Radio. Yeah, that’s the same action Harry Reid is asking all Senators to do, but your letter shows real teeth by denying Rush air time to the troops he calls “phony.” As Jane Hamsher notes, getting Rush off Armed Forces Radio is far more effective than the Senate’s whiney pronouncements which have no teeth.

Richard’s Update: Via Seeing the Forest and Brad Friedman, the NYT grabs the GOP baton for Limbaugh and runs with it: Victim Limbaugh.

As Matt Ortega says:

But of course Limbaugh cannot be classified as a victim in this war of words because he was hit from the front, not the back in, what else, a “drive-by.”

Indeed.
