The Mind Boggles - Robertson Endorses Giuliani
Televangelist Pat Robertson has blessed Rudy Giuliani’s campaign for president. So, how’s that gonna sit with his 700 Club followers?
I don’t supposed anyone should be truly shocked, but Pat Robertson, the 700 Club head honcho and fringe right fundamentalist preacher, has endorsed Benito Rudy Giuliani for president.
The Giuliani campaign has been pandering to the religious right for almost the entire time that he’s been in the race. Still, I really don’t see how Robertson can rationalize endorsing a pro-choice, gay rights, adulterous candidate who appears to also turn a blind eye to corruption in his own midst. And, as Will Bunch points out, Rudy’s law firm also represents a client for whom Robertson endorsed assasination.
It makes no damn sense. But then, this endorsement is made by a guy who makes a living off of fleecing his flock, and was financially as thick as thieves with Charles Taylor. Moral consistency never was Robertson’s forte.
Perhaps this time, Robertson has truly demonstrated to his “followers” that he’s completely off his rocker.

Oh, the little lady preacher from the limestone church
I’ll never forget her, I guess
She preached each Sunday mornin’ on the local radio
With a big black Bible and a snow-white dress
She was 19 years of age and was developed to a fault
But I will admit she knew the Bible well
A little white lace hanky marked the text that she would use
She’d breathe into that microphone and send us all to hell
She had a guitar picker by the name of Luther Short
A hairy-legged soul lost out in sin
She would turn and smile at Luther when the program would commence
With a voice as sweet as angels she would break out in a hymn
I was pickin’ for her too with what we call the doghouse bass
I clung to every word that passed her lips
She was down on booze and cigarettes and high on days to come
And she’d punctuate the prophecy with movements of her hips
The Lord knows how I loved her, he was there each time she preached
But ol’ Luther took her home each Sunday morn’
Lookin’ back I still recall the way it hurt my tender pride
I longed to be a hero but they’re made not born
Sometimes ol’ Luther showed up at the studio half-tight
And smokin’ was a thing he liked to do
She never said a word to him but said a prayer for me
I told her in a way that I’d been prayin’ for her too
One Sunday her old man showed up and said that she was gone
Said she and brother Luther had a call
I can see me standin’ in that studio that day
I had to face the heartbreak, unemployment and all
I don’t know where they are ’cause I ain’t seen them people since
Lord if I judge ‘em let me give ‘em lots o’ room
I know ol’ Luther Short and he’s a hard ol’ boy to change
And I’ve often sat and wondered who it was converted whom
tom t. hall
It makes no damn sense….Perhaps this time, Robertson has truly demonstrated to his “followers” that he’s completely off his rocker.
With all due respect, Richard, this makes perfect sense. Robertson just wants to be on the winning team. I bet if Mitt Romney starts scoring upsets in the early primaries, Robertson will turn around and endorse him.
Brownback went behind McCain today, showing that he’s still got pro-life as his first priority. Oh, I know Robertson says defense and the ecomony (lower taxes) is why he picked Rudy, but McCain’s got the same bona fides as Rudy on those issues, and probably stronger on defense. After all, Rudy has zero defense credentials. He’s got disaster relief cred. . . but not defense.
Disaster relief cred? Like saying he’d been in the 9/11 cleanup as much as any fireman?
The guy’s approval rating in New York City is in negative double digits.
‘though we are on opposite ends of the political spectrum, I could have written your article (not as well, off course), detailing this baffiling endorsement. I would add the issue of gun control, as Giuliani has a track record of being against citizen rights to bear arms.
As you point out, Robertson and his 700 Club has made much if not most of his money railing against ALL that cross-dressing Rudy has stood for. There can be no excuse for betraying principles that you have preached to others to uphold. This is the new definition of the term HYPOCRITE!!!
