HR1955 and the End of America
HR 1955 aka the “Thought Crimes Bill” passes the House with no discussion, and no mention in the main stream press. Yet it is essentially a suspension of your First Amendment rights. Goodbye America, hello Fascist state.
With nary a peep from the main stream press, the House overwhelmingly passed H.R.1955 - Violent Radicalization and Homegrown Terrorism Prevention Act of 2007, with only 6 nay votes. Please watch this discussion about it with Amy Goodman on Democracy Now:
Many people are calling this the “thought crime bill”, and with good reason. This bill will criminalize dissent, and specifically targets the internet as the primary method of dissemination of such dissent. It will create a commission to study blogs such as this one, that question government policy. As one blogger states, “Simply put: If you’ve ever said that George W. Bush should be hanged as a war criminal, you sir, are a Terrorist.”
What is so frightening about this bill is that it was sponsored by Democrats, and pushed through with essentially no discussion. I read the news for hours every day, and just learned of it last week. There has been incredibly thorough analysis on blogs, but the major news outlets have been silent. This bill suspends the first amendment, and only three Democrats, including Dennis Kucinich, and three Republicans voted against it.
So I ask you, and perhaps I will end up in jail for saying so: How can we expect any change in this country without revolution, when the people we voted in for change perpetuate the same oppression as Bushco? Even the Republican led Congress didn’t have the gall to attempt this, yet our newly elected leaders didn’t even think it warranted discussion. The New York Times hasn’t done a story on it, nor the Washington Post. But this guy did. And so did she. And now there’s me, begging you to call your Senators and beg them not to pass this bill. Considering how things went down in the House, it’s probably a futile measure (hell, I have never once been able to even get through to Arlen Specter’s office) but at least you can say you tried, when you’re chatting with your buddies in the work camp.

sg, I wouldn’t worry toooooooo, too much - although the fact that this bill even made it to the floor of the House is concerning.
My guess is that it gets torpedoed in the Senate, and barring that, Bush vetoes it because the gun nuts are also scared shitless by this bill. It’s interesting times, indeed, when we have common cause with the NRA.
“It’s interesting times, indeed, when we have common cause with the NRA.”
Richard, there’s close to 42,000 “hits” when you GoogleSearch “Politics makes strange bedfellows.” (WITH quotation marks)
From the first “hit”: “This saying is adapted from a line in the play The Tempest, by William Shakespeare: “Misery acquaints a man with strange bedfellows.”
“It’s interesting times, indeed, when we have common cause with the NRA.”
I’m no fan of Wayne LaPierre (and heard a fantastic expose on the millionaire head of a nonprofit), but any organization that protects my right to own a gun is someone with whom I have common cause.
I just wish they weren’t such right-wing kooks.
actually after looking at bill, it could theoretically be used against bu$h & co….but its still very scary and i’m sure i’ll be off to the gulag….
HR1955 = McCarthyism version 2.0
Funy, A leftist to left for the left. This bill was sposored by Rep. Jane Harman D.CA (Good to know as this info is not in somegirls article)and cosponsored by 14 other Democrats. I am sure, however, with a little creative thinking, this can be pinned on conservative’s.
Left-Right–Who care’s. It’s all boiling down to big-brother socialists and the rest of us.
When looked at from the Moon, let’s say, what’s the difference between Bush and Sadam Hussein himself.
1. They both invaded another country.
2. They both torture people.
