Breaking news! The investigation is of CIA destruction of CIA tapes that reportedly recorded the torture of prisoners. Attorney General Mike Mukasey has just appointed an outside prosecutor to oversee the case. Of course, most of us think Bush himself, and his sidekick Dick Cheney, ordered the destruction of those tapes, and these guys are canny enough to destroy the chain of evidence linking them to the crime, but still this is amazing news. Look here! Dana Perino says the White House is supportive of the investigation! From CBS:

White House press secretary Dana Perino told reporters, “We continue to support the Attorney General’s investigation into this matter.”

OK, that seems to be weak support, huh? Maybe Dana is polishing her resume and getting ready to jump this ship? Of course, she’s all “no comment” concerning any connection between those tapes and the White House. From the White House Press Office:

Q And have you ever found out why none of the tapes on the two al Qaeda people were not turned over to the commission — the 9/11 commission?

MS. PERINO: As I mentioned this morning, I’m going to check to see if there’s anything more I can say. But as I have from the beginning, I’ve declined to comment while the Justice Department and the CIA have a preliminary investigation going on.
