NY Gov. Spitzer Linked to Hooker Ring, May Resign
NY Governor Elliot Spitzer is apparently set to step down this afternoon, after reports surfaced of his involvement with a high end prostitution ring.
This is quite a shock. As NY State Attorney General, Elliot Spitzer was a pit bull when it came to prosecuting high profile corruption and white collar crime cases. So, why is it that a rising star in Democratic Party politics feels the need to pull a Giuliani and get involved with a prostitution ring? Jeez. Reports are coming in that Spitzer will resign today.
I don’t think anyone ever claimed that dabbling in the business end of a high class hooker operation was strictly the turf of the GOP. But at least Spitzer is doing the right thing (unlike David Vitter or Larry Craig) and falling on his own sword after being embroiled in a sex scandal.
Again, this is quite shocking. As Josh Marshall implies, was someone waiting in the shadows to pull the trigger on this thing? If so, the question becomes: why now?
Update: Well, that’s what I get for linking to the NY Post, which was simply regurgitating Faux News talking points. Apparently, Spitzer isn’t resigning, and his involvement in the ring was most likely that of paying customer. More details here. And of course, the rabid GOP scalp hunters, who wouldn’t think for a moment of asking vice masters Vitter or Craig to resign, are calling for Spitzer’s head.

Yes, it’s corruption whether with Republicans or Democrats, but at least we can say that the Democrat took responsibility for his actions.
eh, prostitution in and of itself is not corruption. corruption is when you supply prostitutes in exchange for favors.
the whole thing stinks of rovian tactics like his siegalman witch hunt. perhaps joe bruno worked with the feds on this.
it would also be irresponsible not to speculate whether there were actually warrants for the over 5000 intercepted calls and text messages, and 6000 emails. is it not possible something came to light under the nsa’s expanded domestic surveillance - the illegal one being run by bushco? the one that congress ordered shut down as tia, which was instead broken up into smaller programs and run under the radar under different names while it became even bigger and ghastlier than tia ever was?
and another question - why are our tax dollars being used to take down a relatively rinky dink criminal enterprise. 4 people laundered 1 million over 4 years…chump change!!! why pursue it if not for political purposes. ridiculous. with all the problems this country is going through, this is the crap our money is being spent on?
please elliot don’t resign!!! tell them to go fuck themselves.
Senator McCain yesterday listed “restoring the publics trust in government” at the top of his -to-do list if elected President. He just might have the right priority. Just look at what beleiving was told us by the Bush adminsitraion has done to us. Can McCain really do anything about it. I doubt it.
Governor Spitzer has dropped the governtment trust gage another which puts it below zero, I guess.
