Brit Hume on John McCain’s “Senior Moment”

Fox News anchor Brit Hume thinks that John McCain might have been experiencing a “senior moment” when McCain linked al-Qaeda with Iran. If it only happened one time, perhaps. In reality, the fact that the linkage was made on multiple occasions makes it much more likely that the McCain campaign was simply caught trying to intentionally deceive a gullible public and pliant media.

Commentary By: Richard Blair

I’m not sure which is more disturbing - presumptive GOP presidential nominee John McCain (who is 72 years old) displaying a senior moment, or Fox News anchor Brit Hume using exactly that excuse in giving McCain a pass on the gaffes:

I think it’s probably just a blip, but it was a bigger blip than he wanted or needed at the time. I think the overall impression of the trip was this is a man welcomed by, knowledgeable of and comfortable with foreign leaders across a big part of the globe. But the mistake, nonetheless, raises questions not about his knowledgability—we all kinda believe he has that—the question, perhaps, about his age, which is an issue. You know, the feeling was not that he’s a dope, didn’t know his way around, that he might have had a senior moment there, and I think that’s unfortunate for him. But I think probably the trip was a net plus…

As Nicole from C&L notes, one time might have been a “senior moment” - which would be worrisome in and of itself, particularly if the guy were to actually be elected, and have access to the nuclear trigger. Multiple times, though, supported by staff agreement from the McCain camp? No, I think we’re talking about intentional deception (and by extension, perpetrating the Cheney Doctrine of Truthiness).

Nice try, Brit. Please play again soon.
