The Unemployment Line: Alberto Gonzales Can’t Find a Job

Alberto Gonzales is having a difficult time finding a job. That’s quite unusual (actually, unprecedented) for a former U.S. Attorney General. One wonders if other members of the Bush Crime Family will have issues with finding employment once they leave the comfy cocoon of Bush’s bubble.

Commentary By: Richard Blair

It’s hard to believe that in the highly politicized environs of Washington, DC, former Attorney General Alberto “Abu Al” Gonzalez is having a hard time finding a job. Could it be because he’s still under investigation for various high crimes and misdemeanors? Or is he just a lousy lawyer that no firm would take the risk of hiring?

Alberto R. Gonzales, like many others recently unemployed, has discovered how difficult it can be to find a new job. Mr. Gonzales, the former attorney general, who was forced to resign last year, has been unable to interest law firms in adding his name to their roster, Washington lawyers and his associates said in recent interviews.

He has, through friends, put out inquiries, they said, and has not found any takers. What makes Mr. Gonzales’s case extraordinary is that former attorneys general, the government’s chief lawyer, are typically highly sought…

After several years of remaking the Department of Justice in the image of an extension of the Executive Branch, after blocking one investigation after another, after making (and approving) legal opinions that first year law students could dissemble, is it any wonder that Abu Al is radioactive? More importantly, it’s really puzzling that no D.C. area law firm, no matter how “republican”, will apparently risk its reputation by bringing Gonzales onboard - so the question must be asked - are there still more shoes to drop in one or more of the scandals with which he was so closely associated?

During the time that he was in office, I opined on a couple of occasions that Gonzales was the most dangerous man in America. Gonzales was the enabler who, as White House counsel, gave George Bush the running room to reinterpret just about every aspect of the United States Constitution. After his appointment as Attorney General, he continued the politicization of the Department of Justice to an extent never previously experienced.

My guess is that we’ll never know the true extent of the damage caused by Alberto Gonzales. We can only be thankful that he was never able to land that seat on the Supreme Court that he so dearly coveted. If a war crimes tribunal is ever convened in the Hague, Gonzales should be one of the first Bush administration enablers in the dock.
