McCain and Lieberman, Grumpy Old Men

Both Joe Lieberman and John McCain are showing signs of being cranky old men, though not in the lovable sort of mold of Matthau and Lemmon’s Grumpy Old Men. McCain is forgetting his Senate votes, and Lieberman was even more dishonest yesterday.

Commentary By: Steven Reynolds

These guys are acting like they’ve lost it lately. John McCain pulled quite a slip in New Orleans, we learn from Politico, when asked why he did not support investigations into the problems with the Bush Administration Katrina response. McCain claimed to have supported “every investigation and ways to find out what caused the tragedy.” Evidently he “forgot” his votes against special investigations in both 2005 and 2006. Ignoring the fact that McCain said he supported “every investigation,” his people are now using the whiney excuse that he meant he supported the Senate investigation. The real truth here, the straight talk, is that McCain doesn’t remember the few votes he’s made over the last several years.

Perhaps the entire McCain campaign will claim forgetfulness when the regular media decides to report on McCain ripping off slogans and logos from the Obama campaign. This is very juvenile, but it certainly does show McCain has nothing out there like a new idea. How can he say he’s a “Leader We Can Believe In” when the slogan itself is a ripoff? What are we supposed to believe in, McCain’s campaign people and their ability to copy? This story is at HuffPo, by the way.

And then there’s McCain’s insistence on slamming Obama for not supporting McCain’s gas tax cut gimmick. McCain, who routinely flies on the family private jet to one of eight homes, claims now that it is elitist to oppose such a gas tax cut. As such he opposes the opinions of all those “elitist” economists, I guess. From the Politico:

Right at the top of his remarks before taking questions from the Nashville crowd — where regular unleaded goes for about $3.85 — McCain said he wanted to discuss “what’s on everybody’s mind, the price of oil.”

McCain said he was struck by the loud opposition by “the elites in this country.”

“The hysterical reaction was a little bit funny,” he said.

In Washington, McCain noted, “the wealthiest people live in Georgetown” and can walk downtown to work. By contrast, he said, the lowest-income workers live the furthest away.

McCain explained that Barack Obama had called the plan “a gimmick”

“Well, I’d like to have some more quote gimmicks to give-low income Americans some relief,” he jabbed back.

Yeah, the straighttalker calls Obama an elitist. Hey, John, the wealthiest people have their own private jets, like you. McCain is starting early here on a desperation campaign, it seems to me, and he may run out of stupid exaggerations by the end of this campaign, but then, he might be spelled a little by his good buddy, Joe Lieberman.

Joe Lieberman decided to tag team with McCain yesterday and give his take on Obama’s speech to AIPAC. After admitting he hadn’t heard the speech, Joe Lieberman proceeded to critique it. Maybe that’s a geezer thing, that you are let off the hook talking about things you admit you know nothing about. If so, this ranks up with McCain’s geezer thing of not remembering what he voted against, twice. As Sam Stein also reports, Obama personally took Joe Lieberman to task on this one. Good to see Barack Obama doesn’t need surrogate hatchet men like McCain does.
