Most Radioactive? John McCain or Gay Hookup Web Site?

One would think that the owner and co-founder of a web site designed to help gay men find sex partners would be the more radioactive man, but McCain has no problem taking Jonathan Crutchley’s money. Crutchley’s customers complained about his McCain contribution enough to force his resignation. McCain is more radioactive.

Commentary By: Steven Reynolds

This isn’t a tough question, is it? Most of America, even those who do not support John McCain, would consider the gay sex “hookup” web site “Manhunt” to be far more radioactive than John McCain. They would be wrong. As it turns out, John McCain is far more radioactive than some innocent gay sex hookup site.

The co-founder of the Manhunt web site, Jonathan Crutchley, maxed out on his contributions to the John McCain for President campaign this year, and that fact has been getting some play this week. You can read a series of the articles about this subject at Towleroad, here, here and here, but what’s really funny is that the man behind the gay sex hookup web site is not the one most radioactive here. Nope, that would be John McCain.

As Towleroad rightly points out, the John McCain camp has said nothing one way or another about whether they are proud to have gotten a big monetary gift from a man who runs an internet version of a bath house. I like how Andy Towle puts it:

It appears John McCain has accepted the maximum individual campaign donation from the owner of America’s largest gay sex hook-up website.

Just because the McCain campaign reacts not one little bit to contributions from good Americans who happen to make their money off of gay men seeking sex doesn’t mean that there aren’t some folks reacting and upset here. The customers of Manhunt are mighty upset. You see, they pay good money to use the Manhunt web site for the purpose of seeking out sex partners, and they don’t want to see the profits from the site going to John McCain’s campaign. What did they do? They started to pull their memberships, and it worked. Jonathan Crutchley, though a co-founder and current Chairman of the Manhunt site, was forced to resign because he supported John McCain. McCain? Well, since Crutchley is not radioactive at all in comparison with McCain himself, he’s still doing nothing about the $2300 contribution from the gay sex site mogul.

i would like to close this post by noting that I think John McCain has every right to seek contributions from the owners of gay sex hookup web sites. Indeed, if he wishes to raise money from men who fetishize about diapers, that’s fine with me. (He knows which Senator to call to help raise those funds, eh?) It is also our right to let America know who is contributing to John McCain’s campaign.
