Palin: “So Sambo beat the bitch!”
How many Republicans think it is OK for Sarah Palin to use racist language? Please raise your hands! Did they all put their hands up?
Let’s just say the young governor has a large vocabulary and doesn’t stint in using it, whether the words are racist or not. Those words in the title are Palin’s reaction, spoken in a diner, to Barack Obama’s finally winning the Democratic nomination. From LA Progressive:
“So Sambo beat the bitch!”
This is how Republican Vice Presidential nominee Sarah Palin described Barack Obama’s win over Hillary Clinton to political colleagues in a restaurant a few days after Obama locked up the Democratic Party presidential nomination.
According to Lucille, the waitress serving her table at the time and who asked that her last name not be used, Gov. Palin was eating lunch with five or six people when the subject of the Democrat’s primary battle came up. The governor, seemingly not caring that people at nearby tables would likely hear her, uttered the slur and then laughed loudly as her meal mates joined in appreciatively.
“It was kind of disgusting,” Lucille, who is part Aboriginal, said in a phone interview after admitting that she is frightened of being discovered telling folks in the “lower 48” about life near the North Pole.
I suppose the Republicans would cheer Palin even louder if they heard this sort of language, but I’m also sure average Americans will react to this as they would if they all heard the story of McCain screaming at his wife and using the “C” word. Seen from that angle, these two who know how to use earthy language are quite a good fit.

Wow… Liberals always show their colors… “We are for women”…. REALLY means… “We are for LIBERAL women”….”We are for minorities”… REALLY means… “We are for LIBERAL minorities”… Never ceases to amaze me how fast liberals will rip some minority or woman to shreds, if they are a conservative. Same old Clarence Thomas backstabbing trick. Liberals are for LIBERALS. Period. End of story. Damned Liberal Nazi thought police. You people make me sick. Even the attitude… of “Republicans” versus “average Americans” shown in this post.. shows your ignorant attitude. If the “average American” agrees with Democrats… if Liberals are so correct about everything… how come there have only been 2 Democrat Presidents in the past 40 years? Sounds more like the average American is a Republican, to me….
Um, can you address the use of the word “Sambo” by Palin? Heck, you can even discredit the source if you wish, but random and off-topic insults makes you look like you’ve got a bad case of McADHD or something.
So let me ask. Why do you think it is OK for a leader of our country to refer to a black person as a “Sambo?”
@steve: Let me guess: you live in a small town or grew up in one, and feel that intellectuals from the big cities are ripping your small town hero candidate to shreds using their complex and powerful brains so that they can gain power and ruin your rural life with their heinous social policies.
Can I ask: How is your quality of life any different now, after eight years of conservative rule, than it was after the eight years that Clinton was in office? If you’re like the average small-town American, you’re worse off now than you were during the Clinton years.
Hey Steve: Get a clue, man. Liberals may be intellectual snobs, but unless you’re either very rich, or an ultra-right-wing Christian zealot, you’re better off with a democratic president, who will at least send a bit more tax revenue your way.
So where is the proof to this? Any “witnesses” other than potential made up one? No? OK, how about any other times that the gov used off color language? None? Hmm, OK…how about…er…
So let me ask. With no history of such language and no credible witnesses (”Lucille” in the context of this article is not a credible witness), why do you think it is OK to spread around our world probable falsehoods and personal attacks? The “Sambo comment” is more likely the work and result of someone’s “republicans are evil, so we are allowed to lie about those racist, elitest, etc, etc, etc” attitude rather than an actual event. This comment has about as much truth to it as Michelle Obama’s “whitey comment.”
All of you, on both sides of the political fence need to grow up and realize that the best way to win elections is not to smear mud and fecal matter on the opposing side, but rather it is to win with the power of ideas. If you idea is not being received, do not resort to the “all Republicans are racist” or the “all Democrats are pussies” name calling. ASZ, if you had any credibility as a commentary pundit of sorts, you would take down this Sambo” trash from your site.
Oh yes, and finally,
GIGGITY-GIGGITY-GOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
All of you, on both sides of the political fence need to grow up and realize that the best way to win elections is not to smear mud and fecal matter on the opposing side, but rather it is to win with the power of ideas.
Have you been in a coma for the last 30 years or are you just disingenuous?
Is this a macaca moment? It certainly has not reached the mainstream press as yet, that’s for sure.
Have you been in a coma for the last 30 years or are you just disingenuous?
Not in a coma, just sick of what the process has become. I, and more importantly many others, have started to say personality be damned - ideas matter. The is why people like Ralph Nader and Ron Paul, who both have the personality and likeability of dead goldfish, have growing and vocal followings. Ideas and values are coming back, and with each election cycle are becoming more important. Most people turn “off” once they hear mud and feces.
I’ve never really considered myself to be a member of any specific party. In all honesty, I view the concept as absurd. What I have noticed, however, is how completely disgusting John McCain is. Its nothing to do with the fact that he called his wife a cunt. In all likelihood, she probably is a cunt, and there really isn’t much reason for anyone to speculate on this. What bothers me is how repugnantly fake John McCain seems to be. That smug grin and completely frightening false persona that he appears to possess…. it scares the living hell out of me to know that he even has a chance to become President. But this brings me to the final point… I don’t believe that this country has a smidgen of a chance for a step in the right direction. None of these candidates or representatives make any of the decisions they act upon, and none of them represent the American people. They represent a few rich men, who fund both sides of wars, as well as other travesties. I recall a famous, radical President who dared to challenge the corruptness in our government. He said that we needed to get rid of the Federal Reserve, lose our central bank. And he was fucking assassinated. Maybe people will start to believe in themselves and ignore the faux pas of American politics when there is an American Union and we’re all using the Amero. Because the dollar is a worthless piece of paper. And we’re always going to be in debt.
We’re fucked, people.
The little reddit indicator is up to 61, and that’s just in the couple hours since this was posted. that means we’re getting a lot of people here who normally do not read ASZ. Please keep it civil, folks, and thanks.
She’s the female version of George Bush. Her speech was written by W’s speechwriters and she delivered it like he would if people still liked him. She even has that same facial mannerism - purse the lips and jut the jaw after making a statement. Probably has the smirk too…………
I doubt the validity of this article, but am interested to see where this information goes. Doesn’t seem to have too credible of a source. I for one, am a Republican who would be upset and outraged over a VP nominee using the term Sambo, as if race isn’t an evil enough presence already without our nations political leaders taking part. I’m sure also many conservative Christians would be concerned about even the word bitch coming from an otherwise fairly Christianese lady. But my thoughts on this situation are instantly crowded when the author wrote “Republicans would cheer Palin even louder…” I didn’t realize I was a separate class of American either. Please, when addressing news that you wish people to take seriously lets try an at least look civil and objective. Alll this does is create a little democrat huddle and piss otherwise interested readers like me off. When writing about another person casting stereotypes, and slinging mud, you can be much more persuasive by refraining from those same actions.
I call bullshit. “Lucille?” If you’re going to make up a name, why not Lurleen or Jolene or some real backwoods white trash monicker? You lying sack. This isn’t even yellow journalism, it’s simply making up stories, and throwing them against the wall to try to make them stick. It’s not true and you know it’s not true.
An anonymous waitress overheard something? OMG stop the presses! It must be real!
@Steve - why don’t you call the kettle black a little more?
Anybody got a recording? How about a person who will identify themselves who will attest to having heard this?
Sorry, but “some waitress named lucille” isn’t quite enough for me to start the torchlight parade and go on a witch hunt.
Sorry, but this is hardly credible. A waitress with a cliched name, who doesn’t want to be identified, just happens to have this little bon mot for people to checw on because Obama is falling in the polls. Riiiiight.
Why can’t the so called progressive community focus on issues instead of constantly resorting to these kind of ad hominem attacks?
They seem incapable of telling us why their ideas are better. All they do is demonize ther opponents.
With regards to the first comment “…there have only been 2 Democrat Presidents in the past 40 years…” I just checked that. Since 1968 Lyndon B Johnson, Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton have all been President and, I believe, Democrats. Perhaps you would care to engage your brain before typing next time and at least check your facts when they can be easily proven to be incorrect.
She also called Native Americans in Alaska “Arctic Arabs.”
Dude, I think you hit the nail on the head.

Oh please. Every race makes jokes (and sometimes very crude ones) about other races. It’s completely normal. We need to get over this whole “color blind” BS. Making an off color joke does not make you a racist.
Making an off color joke while an officeholder does say something about one’s judgement, though, Mike Keen, and it is not a good commentary on that judgement.
Inasmuch as Obama supporters were gleefully selling and wearing anti-Hillary T-shirts that said “Bros before Hos,” they may not want to make hay with this story. Ever wonder where the anger of the PUMA crowd comes from? This is where it comes from.
Jake Tapper discussed this at ABC.com
Nicole Belle discussed this at Crooks and Liars:
Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin sent out a fundraising solicitation today that charged that “the Obama/Biden Democrats have been vicious in their attacks directed toward me, my family and John McCain.”
I asked spokespeople of the McCain campaign and the Republican National Committee just which “Obama/Biden Democrats” they’re referring to.
The response I got was that Obama spokesman Mark Bubriski erroneously attacked Palin as a supporter of Pat Buchanan.
That’s it. That’s the evidence.
An attack on Palin herself.
In other words, they can’t name one person affiliated with the Obama-Biden campaign who attacked the Palin family.
This whole Culture of Victimization of the Republican Party makes me ill. As Tapper points out, McCain said heartless things about the adolescent Chelsea Clinton but any little scrutinization on them has them crying like WATBs.

Never saw that T-Shirt, Margot. do you have documentation?
I don’t think that it is a good idea to say such ignorant things as “Its not like anyone in government says off-color racist remarks”; think about what you are compromising by accepting that sort of monikers being associated with the people. What if you are the recipient of such hateful works? Why on earth would an argument that ‘Other people say it!!’ make sense to anyone? Shouldn’t we at least TRY and reduce the racism in our representative government? Palin embodies separation. She has little to no experience working with multi-ethnic scenarios, no secondary language skills, no real world experience and potentially…even if a little itsy bitsy itty bitty bit…racist…and of course proud to send those same racist ‘values’ to her children.
Can you imagine how overwhelming it will be for her to see a parking garage with more than 30 cars in it? How scary the big roads of NYC will be? Experience is an interesting argument that she claims to have a deep well…
She does NOT live in the real world! She lives in a tiny segment of our society that do not participate in the everyday experiences that the MAJORITY of us have to deal with. She does not have to worry about commuting, inner-city crime, professional sports, international airports, MILLIONS of people from many many diverse backgrounds both ethnically and theologically…she has experience in a SMALL TOWN and a SMALL STATE. The state is populated by a majority of white (90+%) residents and a significant portion of those constituents are recluse or want to be left alone…that is NOT a hard job. There is NO skill required on that gig. No one cares what you think or how you act. Sarah Palin has as much experience as a president of a NCAA school.
She is a waste of all of our political thoughts.
Making an off colour joke doesn’t make you racist but saying racist things does.
Seattle Aaron, please tell us what you really mean. Don’t hold back so much, willya?
“I suppose the Republicans would cheer Palin even louder if they heard this sort of language, but I’m also sure average Americans will react to this as they would if they all heard the story of McCain screaming at his wife and using the “C” word”
It appears that you harbor some bitterness toward “republicans” or at least hold them beneath you as a person. Even worse, you appear to view them as less than the “average” person, meaning republicans are the bottom of the barrel.
That’s not a healthy stereotype to harbor against any race, gender, or political affiliation.
Even a true racist is going to largely be a product of his environment. Doesn’t he still deserve your respect as a fellow human? Even if you are right and he is wrong, does that make you better than him?
Evan, have you been sleeping the last 8 years?
Everyone who hasn’t marched in lockstep with the Republican talking point of the day has been labeled a “commie, a dirty liberal, a traitor” and much worse by members of the current administration and their cohorts in the “media”. So don’t get your panties in a twist and cry “foul, play nice” when the mirror is held up for you to look in. The “pity card” play isn’t going to work.
Evan, did you say a true racist deserves my respect as a human being? did you really say that? If so, everyone here has a clue now as to my feeling for many Republicans. That said, I’ve voted for Republicans as recently as a couple years ago. Not all are as ugly in their ethics and morals as the ones I dispise.
BOOM. There’s the difference between “liberals” and “conservatives”. Liberals will call a BS story BS, as they are doing here, even if is about their opponent, which is admirable and decent. Conservatives will ride it, milk it, and nuture it for all it’s worth if it harms their opponent.
To the poster who said they thought it was silly to belong to / vote for one party, you MUST realize that this is where the repubs get their power, right or wrong. They vote straight ticket no matter what, just ask one of them. This is what is so ground-breaking/shattering/amazing about what the bush administration has done that was SO bad, SO wrong, SO corrupt, in causing a goodly number of republicans to speak up, change parties and express their outrage in general. I guess things had to get really, really bad to get at least SOME republicans thinking. The rest are STILL braindead, apparently.
PDS Syndrome. First it was Bush Derangement Syndrome now it is Palin Derangement Syndrome. The liberals fear her and we all know what they are capable of doing. It won’t work. We normal folks love Sarah Palin and telling lies about her makes us love her even more.
As Carl Sagan has wisely said, “Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence,” and thus in this instance of a damaging verbal quote the actual name of the witness and another witness are needed to corroborate the damaging phrase.
Sad when a woman, especially a so-called “good chrisitan” uses a slur - against herself! This is the woman mccain chose to win over hilary supporters - aren’t they “bitches”? This is exactly the kind of woman the right wing bigot schmos like - “get me a beer, bitch.” And she loves it. “yes honey!”
Pathetic.
So good to see that our VP wannabe knows how to call a spade a spade. I’m sure her Mick running mate agrees…
“Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence,” and thus in this instance of a damaging verbal quote the actual name of the witness and another witness are needed to corroborate the damaging phrase.
I’m assuming Alex that you’d require that same standard of the “anonymous sources” that the Bush admin. is so fond of using to go to war, or out spies, or any one of their crimes… Right Alex… where were those corroborating witnesses??? Or does that only apply to the “commoners”???
and of course All Republicans have many “on the record” witnesses to all their allegations and slurs that get reported as fact… isn’t that right Alex???
Obama has been able to overcome every obstacle that has been thrown at him.
I have come to learn that it is pointless to argue politics it is almost as bad as arguing religion.
The key to getting someone really interested in what is going on in this election and society in general, and then getting them to vote with their better conscious, is to let your actions speak for themselves. Let this movement speak for itself. Get involved in the community, challenge mainstream media to bring truth and fairness back into their network. Get up close and personal with the voters.
It is clear that some people are out of touch with reality.
Some of the opinions expressed in this forum are testimate to the success of a master plan to get us all angry with one another and throwing stones at eachother.
Unfortunately our media continues to disengage free thought and objective views.
But it is a fact that if someone looks for the unadulterated truth , they will find it.
It is then that persons responsibility to spread that truth to the masses.
Obama will be the next president of these divided states of America
And as we speak, there are individuals from every color, creed, and religion that are organizing their communities, that would have never under any other usual circumstance, come together.
The man who served as the medium to allow such a wonder to take place has my vote.
History proves that the only real changes in our nations history occurred when ordinary people dared to unite to accomplish amazing things.
Don’t spend another minute arguing back and forth get engaged and connected with folks in your community!
