The McCain Whines About the Times, Palin Just Whines

It’s campaign season, and that gives us Republican lies, then it gives us Republican whining when caught at lies. We’ve got the whines tonight, by Steven Schmidt of the McCain campaign, and by girl wonder Sarah Palin, who combines whine and lie effortlessly. Give her a prefect ten at the combination of lie and whine, she stuck the landing.

Commentary By: Steven Reynolds

I wrote earlier about the New York Times article about McCain’s campaign manager taking $2,000,000 in fees to lobby for Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. The Times reported also about the McCain campaign ad accusing Obama of being cozy with the execs of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. Clearly the Times uncovered hypocrisy, but the McCain camp, in the person of Steven Schmidt, fired off a whiney complaint that the New York Times is in the tank for Obama. (This is the same New York Times that endorsed McCain for the Republican nomination for President.) Here’s a bit of Schmidt’s spurious whining, from AFP:

John McCain’s White House campaign Monday lashed out at the media and declared that the venerable New York Times was “150 percent” behind Democratic hopeful Barack Obama.

McCain senior strategist Steve Schmidt rebuked journalists he said had failed in their duty to submit Obama to intense scrutiny and accused news organizations of hounding McCain’s running mate Sarah Palin.

“Whatever the New York Times once was, it is today not by any standard a journalistic organization,” said Schmidt on a conference call with reporters.

“It is a pro-Obama advocacy organization that every day attacks the McCain campaign, attacks Senator McCain, attacks Governor Palin, and excuses Senator Obama.

“This is an organization that is completely, totally, 150 percent in the tank for the Democratic candidate, which is their prerogative to be, but let’s not be dishonest and call it something other than what it is.”

“It is an organization that has made a decision to cast aside its journalistic integrity and tradition to advocate for the defeat of one candidate — in this case, John McCain.”

The New York Times defended its journalistic integrity, and the Obama camp responded as well, listing the forty in-depth investigative articles by the Times about Obama, articles that covered every stage of Barack Obama’s life. Were the New York Times “in the tank” for Obama, then none of those would have been written, but Steve Schmidt doesn’t use logic in his whining. No, he didn’t even note that the New York Times has not covered that part of John McCain’s life where he was involved in the huge financial scandal that was the Savings & Loan scandal of the 80’s, and Mr. McCain’s very close relationship with the man at the heart of the scandal, Charles Keating. Time Magazine brings that Obama campaign response, which, all in all, makes Steven Schmidt and the McCain campaign look like a bunch of whiners who don’t have their facts straight.

Schmidt also whined to Politico, and again couldn’t get his facts straight. This time he was whining that the press was calling the McCain campaign liars, while, well, lying to the press during his whiney accusations. If McCain were smart, he’d fire this incompetent whiner, but I’m thinking he’s not all that smart, given that he nominated a whiner as Vice President. Which brings us to Sarah Palin’s whine.

Sarah Palin doesn’t use any facts in her whine. The poor weepy woman is complaining that the Obama/Biden campaign is attacking her and her family, with full knowledge that the Obama/Biden campaign has refused to comment at all on her family. Here’s poor Sarah Palin’s whine based on zero facts from CNN:

“Friends, in the course of a few weeks, the Obama-Biden Democrats have launched attack after attack on me, my family and John McCain,” Palin writes in the email. “They’re desperate to win and they’ll no doubt launch these attacks against other reformers on our ticket.”

No doubt Sarah Palin really believes the Obama campaign is attacking her family, against all factual evidence. She may even consider herself a reformer, despite her reign of favoritism and patronage in Alaska. But we’ve known for a long time that Republicans have a tenuous and contemptuous hold on reality. The surprise here would be if the McCain campaign and Sarah Palin had the honor to tell the truth and refrain from their constant whine that they are victims.
