Polls: Bright Shiny News for a Wednesday
Two polls today show Obama up over the 50% mark. Public Policy reports a 7 point lead for Obama in Colorado, and the Washington Post shows a 9 point lead nationally. Go bathe in some good news, folks, and pray Obama gets it right concerning the bailout, so that he maintains his lead.
No words in this post about the latest McCain lies, Palin idiocy, or Republican sex criminal. It’s time to dwell on good news.
Frist, the Public Policy Poll of likely voters in Colorado has movement for Obama from a virtual dead heat a couple weeks ago to Obama breaking the 50% barrier. Yeah, in the swing state of Colorado the polling has it 51-44 for Obama in Colorado. The poll cites higher negatives for Sarah Palin. I’m guessing “it was the economy, stupid.” The polling also shows both Tom and Mark Udall up in Colorado and New Mexico Seante racesw by a long distance.
The latest Washington Post poll also shows a breakthrough for Obama. This time the sinking economy gets the credit for the Obama lead widening beyond the statistical dead heat the race has been in for a long time. Here’s the WaPo:
More voters trust Obama to deal with the economy, and he currently has a big edge as the candidate who is more in tune with the economic problems Americans now face. He also has a double-digit advantage on handling the current problems on Wall Street, and as a result, there has been a rise in his overall support. The poll found that, among likely voters, Obama now leads McCain by 52 percent to 43 percent. Two weeks ago, in the days immediately following the Republican National Convention, the race was essentially even, with McCain at 49 percent and Obama at 47 percent.
As a point of comparison, neither of the last two Democratic nominees — John F. Kerry in 2004 or Al Gore in 2000 — recorded support above 50 percent in a pre-election poll by the Post and ABC News.
One warning. The poll shows people cool to the huge bailout proposed by the Bush Administration. Obama needs to take some care. Heck, he needs to treat Paulson and his magic cure as if, well, it were a Nigerian scam of some sort.
Anyway, the polls are blooming sweetly today. Enjoy your hump day and bask in it while you can. The Republicans will likely turn out with something ugly soon to temper the optimism, but I’ll be headed to work whistling.

steve, as a corrective to your jubilance this morning, read the following
clarence page:

jonah goldberg, not my favorite guy, is crowing about this — that racism is not a fair claim:
http://www.realclearpolitics.com/articles/2008/09/the_media_play_the_race_card_o.html
in my cruise through the news this morning, came across these two items: clarence page talking about the “‘bubba” vote, and jonah goldberg talking about the “bubba”, but each with different takes on what is becoming the unknown quantity in this election.
if mccain wins — after all his gaffes and all the corruption shown to prevail among his campaign staff — something will have to explain the vote. I think it is more than the so-called bradley effect.
let’s hope, though, that you are correct about the polls, but i am still holding my breath
last night i heard rachel maddow report that, in negotiations between iraq and US about a troop withdrawal date, the US wanted it extended to 2011, for “internal US political purposes”.

Dad Gum! What next! and does this affect the bubba vote?
