McCain Workers Walking Off the Job Over Moral Issues

The Republicans can’t use Robocall telemarketing in some states, and must use live workers. The problem is the live workers are staying home instead of reading immoral and unethical scripts. A campaign reform McCain will never tackle is to get rid of Robocalls, thus letting American workers serve as a moral check on GOP campaigns.

Commentary By: Steven Reynolds

These workers are in Indiana, and they don’t work directly for the McCain campaing. They work for Americall, a telemarketing form in Hobart, IN. Americall has a contract to make calls to Indiana residents, because Indiana does not allow Robocalls. (Why does any state allow Robocalls at all?) What we’re seeing here is that workers, even the lowly paid ones who work in telemarketing boiler rooms of the Midwest (like West Virginia) are far, far more moral than the owners of these telemarketing companies who contract with the Republican Party and John McCain. Here’s the report from Greg Sargent of TPM:

Some three dozen workers at a telemarketing call center in Indiana walked off the job rather than read an incendiary McCain campaign script attacking Barack Obama, according to two workers at the center and one of their parents.

Nina Williams, a stay-at-home mom in Lake County, Indiana, tells us that her daughter recently called her from her job at the center, upset that she had been asked to read a script attacking Obama for being “dangerously weak on crime,” “coddling criminals,” and for voting against “protecting children from danger.”

Williams’ daughter told her that up to 40 of her co-workers had refused to read the script, and had left the call center after supervisors told them that they would have to either read the call or leave, Williams says. The call center is called Americall, and it’s located in Hobart, IN.

“They walked out,” Williams says of her daughter and her co-workers, adding that they weren’t fired but willingly sacrificed pay rather than read the lines. “They were told [by supervisors], `If you all leave, you’re not gonna get paid for the rest of the day.”

So the McCain campaign is losing the support of workers in a state they absolutely need because of moral issues while trying to get those same workers to call other Hoosiers and warn them that Obama will not protect their children. I don’t know this new “won’t protect your children charge,” but I assume it has as much basis as a whole series of baselsss McCain campaign Robocall tactics.

Let’s come back to the notion of Robocalls. Clearly the Robocalls being sent out by the McCain campaign are as immoral and untruthful as we’ve seen since those Robocalls used against McCain back in 2000. Yeah, John McCain had a chance to learn to stand tall ethically back then, but passed up on it. Anyway, if you were to ban Robocalls througout the country, forcing campaigns to hire actual workers, then that’s a bit of a campaign season jobs program. Workers cost more than Robocalls, so that means we’d get less of the stupid calls. Finally, workers are beginning to prove a check against the immoral and unethical actions of Republicans.
