Bush in His Own Words

George and Laura Bush sat down with Charlie Gibson and a softball game broke out. Still, despite the kids gloves being on, Bush made some embarrassing admissions. Some of them need little int he way of commentary. I’m wondering if there is still anyone who admits to having voted for him.

Commentary By: Steven Reynolds

This from an interview with Charlie Gibson on ABC. Man, this interview makes Sarah Palin look like a winner!

On Iraq:

“Well, I think I was unprepared for war. In other words, I didn’t campaign and say, “Please vote for me, I’ll be able to handle an attack.” In other words, I didn’t anticipate war. Presidents — one of the things about the modern presidency is that the unexpected will happen.”

On the current finacial crisis, blaming others:

“You know, I’m the President during this period of time, but I think when the history of this period is written, people will realize a lot of the decisions that were made on Wall Street took place over a decade or so, before I arrived in President, during I arrived in President.”

On wanting a do-over:

I don’t know — the biggest regret of all the presidency has to have been the intelligence failure in Iraq. A lot of people put their reputations on the line and said the weapons of mass destruction is a reason to remove Saddam Hussein. It wasn’t just people in my administration; a lot of members in Congress, prior to my arrival in Washington D.C., during the debate on Iraq, a lot of leaders of nations around the world were all looking at the same intelligence. And, you know, that’s not a do-over, but I wish the intelligence had been different, I guess.

Man, that whole paragraph about WMD and he didn’t mention Joe Wilson or Valerie Palme at all!

On being an embarrassing SOB to be associated with:

Well, first of all, no one will be more relieved than my mother and dad, because one of the things I learned during his presidency is being the son of the President is a lot tougher than being the President. I mean, it is really agonizing to have somebody you truly love get banged around in the political process. It was hard. And so, no doubt they’re going to be relieved to have their boy out of the limelight. And I bet a lot of our friends will be relieved, too.

Stimulating softball game, wasn’t it?
