The War on Mormons Has Begun!
Jonah Goldberg is a conservative columnist who likely has a difficutl time typing in high heels. He’s a drama queen, and this time it is about Mormons as victims in the aftermath of Proposition 8, a measure they bankrolled to limit the rights of our fellow citizens. It’s a War on Mormons for Goldberg, just like the bogus War on Christmas.
Jonah Goldberg has done it again, published a mindnumbingly stupid column. This time his column describes the Mormon Church as victim. Of course, it’s all got to do with Proposition 8 in California, the Mormon Church financially backing the proposition, and the backlash they have felt since. Yes, they campaigned to take the right of marriage away from tens of thousands of citizens in Californai, and now Goldberg poses the Mormon Church as victim. Mindnumbingly stupid. From the LA Times:
No, it’s just that Mormons are the most vulnerable of the culturally conservative religious denominations and therefore the easiest targets for an organized campaign against religious freedom of conscience.
Traditional religion is the enemy anywhere it runs afoul of complete social acceptance of homosexuality. In New Mexico, a wedding photographer was fined nearly $7,000 for refusing to shoot a gay commitment ceremony. The dating site eHarmony, run by evangelicals, was just bullied by gay activists via the New Jersey Division on Civil Rights into starting up a site for gays. The first 10,000 registrants must get six months free.
I suppose I have nothing against a church weighing in on a public issue, but I will condemn the action when the issue they advocate for is the diminishment of rights for their own fellow citizens. For someone like Jonah Goldberg to then claim the Mormons are being persecuted is stupid. But, then, Goldberg’s rhetoric is usually childish and poorly thought. Oh, and Goldberg flirts with going all Godwin on us. Such a drama queen.
It’s amazing. Hollywood liberals, who shout “McCarthyism!” as a first resort, see nothing wrong with this. If Jews were attacked in this way for giving too much money to a political cause, Barbra Streisand would already have a French passport.
The real issue here is that Republicans like Jonah Goldberg love playing the victim. As much as they bully other Americans and back legislation that wishes to hamper liberty, they also whine whenever called on such ugly and undemocratic policies. No, I don’t advocate vandalism — Goldberg will likely accuse me of it in his logic-deprived prose. I advocate freedom, the ability of all lawful citizens to reach their aspirations in life. For gay Americans that aspirration includes the legal recognition of their lifetime commitments. Goldberg advocates whining, if he doesn’t, as does the Mormon Church, advocate the denial of freedom to fellow citizens.

Referendum, initiative, and recall were methods proposed by 20th century Progressives as a way to reform state government. Today we find that groups with deep pockets who do not live in the state come in to effect the outcome of the election. They have the money to create boogymen and scare voters who then must live with the results of the outside group’s actions. I am against ALL outside groups who come into a state and interfer with the people’s will (that is what it would have been if things had played out without interference.)
Besides, is it just not crazy that the group which faced huge prejudice for its polygamous past would now be the leading advocate for one man, one woman marriage? Sounds like another example of converts being the most zealous. Perhaps they can next set their sites on serial monogamy. After all, divorce is frowned upon in the LDS.
I’m sure I’m gonna catch some flack with this but I’m for civil rights and freedom of expression for everybody. Even the assholes I don’t agree with.

Now see, I don’t think I can agree agree with that (assuming of course it’s not complete bullshit propaganda). Both of these are private businesses and they are not providing some life saving medical or other required service nor are they the only business of their type in the area. I may not agree with their views, but they have a right ( and should have a right ) to refuse service to anyone they want for any reason they want. (Of course if they refuse service they can’t keep any money they took). A wedding photographer would need to state his objections clearly BEFORE the wedding of course - trying to cancel on the day of the wedding is ridiculous and is tantamount to sabotage. I had a photographer pull a passive agressive on me because I was having alcohol had my reception and cancel on me without even telling me. I was pissed off but I’m not going to sue her or anything.
As far as eHarmony, why the should they be forced to serve gay people? These aren’t public buildings or government meetings or what have you. It’s one online site amongst thousands that provide the same service. Yeah it’s shity. Yeah it’s a bunch of nonsense. Yeah it’s a bunch of religious claptrap but these people can very easily go elsewhere to get the service they wanted and probably get it better than from the original company. Nobody is going to die from a lack of booty call. Nobody’s life is going to be put in jeopardy by having an angry religious conservative homophobe photographing their gay wedding.
If I’m running a hair salon and I can’t stand Christians, I should be able to refuse them service. Hell, post a sign that says “We reserve the right to refuse service to anyone for any reason.”. Granted I probably wouldn’t make any money since you can’t swing a dead cat in this country without clocking a bible banger these days.
E, those are Jonah’s characterizations. What’s the chance they reflect reality? 10%?
