Matt Drudge’s Bitch Promoting Bill Kristol v. Matt Damon

Andrew Breitbart, who runs a right wing news aggregator web site, is promoting a debate between William Kristol, late of the New York Times but still PNAC Chair, and Matt Damon, actor and all around good guy. This serves no purpose except to make Breitbart seem a wee bit more important than his role as Matt Drudge’s bitch.

Commentary By: Steven Reynolds

Well, I’m not the one who called Andrew Breitbart “Matt Drudge’s Bitch” — Andrew Breitbart himself coined the “Matt Drudge’s Bitch” label for himself. (I suppose there’s some sort of closeted gay Republican thing going on there.) So let’s put Breitbart’s nickname up here in lights, because he is promoting maybe the most stupid of debates out there. In one corner he has chosen arch-conservative, Editor of the Weekly Standard, and (former, as of today) columnist in the New York Times, Bill Kristol. In the other corner Breitbart wants to pit Matt Damon, who has once insulted both Bill Kristol and Sarah Palin. Yikes, he insulted them! What a complete cad!

Matt Damon is a fairly politically active actor, no doubt. But he’s an actor. While he seems relatively informed, and seems quite outspoken (according to Breitbart Damon once called Kristol an “idiot“). But that’s no reason to pit him against Bill Kristol, whose career is politics. One would assume Bill Kristol could mop the floor with Damon in a debate. But, wait, but wait, Bill Kristol’s career is a rollicking ride through the most sensational Republican flops of the last 25 years.

William Kristol began his political career working for Bill Bennett in the Reagan Administration. Later he worked in the very challenging role as Dan Quayle’s Chief of Staff, earning the nickname of “Dan Quayle’s brain.” That surely is not as dubious a distinction as is Kristol’s founding and Chairing of PNAC, the force behind the massive Bush Iraqi misadventure. The facts show that Bill Kristol has overachieved on the GOP side of things the last 25 years, climbing several rungs above his competence level. I suppose you could say he is the very definition of the Peter Principle. To that end, this might actually make a good debate, as Bill Kristol hasn’t shown himself to be right on an issue in several years now.

But Breitbart is the ticket to craziness here. The guy is a complete loon. He wants to promote a debate between the failed leader of an intellectually bankrupt think tank and a reasonably politically active actor? Breitbart claims to be offering a $100,000 appearance fee to Matt Damon, to be paid to the charity of Damon’s choice. Breitbart has here about the stupidest idea since he called himself Matt Drudge’s bitch. (By the way, does anyone know if there was an affair between Breitbart and the famously closeted Matt Drudge?) It appears to me that Andrew Breitbart simply wants to promote something where he can make a buck, with no real interest in finding out the truth about anything, or even allowing the potential participants to enlighten us about issues. Andrew Breitbart is trying to become a fight promoter, when he should stick to being a web site editor, or Matt Drudge’s bitch, whichever gives him more jollies.

OK, in the interest of full disclosure, I first wrote about Matt Damon back in 2006 when he optioned to do a film of a story about a guy who was gotten off death row by a couple acquaintances of mine. Matt Damon is supposed to play Gordon Cooney, and since I know Gordon, I thought the casting was a bit of a hoot.
