GOP: Focus on the Family “Too Big to Fail”

Breaking: Focus on the Family is having financial problems so deep that they have spun off their homosexual conversion ministry, “Love Won Out.” This is too much for Republicans, who voted scream about the bailouts of the financial and auto industries, but won’t let the industry central to their base fail.

Commentary By: Steven Reynolds

In a departure from its current policies on government bailouts of the auto and financial industries, the Republican Party announced an initiative to save Focus on the Family, the right wing Christian organization dedicated to combatting the spread of teh gay. Sources inside the Republican Party say the funding for the bailout will be hidden inside some bill Barack Obama really, really wants to get passed. This action is needed because Focus on the Family, founded by James Dobson, is suffering from a $6MM shortfall in its budget. They’ve even had to sell off a valuable program, the “Love Won Out” franchise, which attracts many followers around the country. Here’s a bit of the RawStory:

Focus on the Family, founded by child psychologist James Dobson, is on pace to fall $6 million short of a $138 million budget for the fiscal year that began last October, spokesman Gary Schneeberger said.

Jim Daly, president and CEO of the Colorado Springs, Colo.-based evangelical ministry, explained the challenges in a letter to approximately 800,000 donors.

“Right now we’re facing a serious budget shortfall that threatens our ability to reach out to parents, families and married couples who count on our help,” Daly wrote. “Income is down nearly $6 million from what we expected and planned for this year. I want to assure you that we’re committed to good stewardship AND living within our means, just as so many families are today.”

Focus on the Family also announced Tuesday it would no longer stage “Love Won Out” conferences across the country. The events drew both participants and picketers for their promise to “help men and women dissatisfied with living homosexually understand that same-sex attractions can be overcome.”

The events will go on, instead staged by Orlando, Fla.-based Exodus International, a network of ministries whose core message is “Freedom from homosexuality through the power of Jesus Christ.”

While the Focus on the Family organization claims close ties with Jesus Christ himself, there’s been no answers to their prayers concerning their budget shortfall, so they’ve turned to Republican legislators around the country for a handout, figuring, it is guessed, that the GOP will not want to see a mainstay of their constituency fail.

Calls have been made to Lindsey Graham and Mitch McConnell, both Republican leaders in the Senate, have not been returned as of the time of this report.
