Grassley’s Condition Worsens, Dementia Feared

Charles Grassley’s condition is worsening. Now he’s not just pretending to be a 13 year old girl on Twitter, but he’s doing an imitation of Sarah Palin with the “death panel” statements at Town Hall meetings. Iowans will note that Grassley has himself not gone before their state’s death panels, which Grassley’s grandson voted for.

Commentary By: Steven Reynolds

In the recent past this column identified the fact that Chuck Grassley, the Senior Senator from Iowa, had been suffering from a late-life mental crisis. Mr. Grassley was caught twittering like a 13 year old girl. As you can imagine, nobody in the media took this revelation seriously, and so without intervention Mr. Grassley’s condition seems to have worsened. He is now blubbering about pulling the plug on grandma. From Huffington Post:

Appearing at a town hall in his home state of Iowa, Sen. Chuck Grassley told a crowd of more than 300 that they were correct to fear that the government would “pull the plug on grandma.”

“There is some fear because in the House bill, there is counseling for end-of-life,” Grassley said. “And from that standpoint, you have every right to fear. You shouldn’t have counseling at the end of life. You ought to have counseling 20 years before you’re going to die. You ought to plan these things out. And I don’t have any problem with things like living wills. But they ought to be done within the family. We should not have a government program that determines if you’re going to pull the plug on grandma.”

I would be remiss in not pointing out that Charles Grassley himself has not been put before a death panel, and neither has his wife, despite the fact that their grandson, Pat Grassley, has voted for a very similar “end-of-life consultation” provision in the Iowa House.

What’s become clear is that Charles Grassley’s faculties are dimming. Beyond the reliving of childhood he experienced while twittering as a 13 year old girl, he’s now suffering from either an unreasoned paranoia, or maybe he’s just a Sarah Palin wannabe, so eager for publicity that he’ll say anything to get the whackdoodles who can’t even understand Hawaii is a state to take notice. The man needs help. It’s no wonder, though, that the people of Iowa are happy to have him in Washington rather than a burden on their own state’s mental health system.

Someone needs to offer treatment for Mr. Grassley, and I’m not talking death panels here. I suggest some time of observation and then some heavy doses of anti-psychotic drugs. Of course, that’s not possible without Mr. Grassley’s going in for treatment himself. We can all pray that he will do so, or that a friend or relative performs an intervention.
